• Lose weight fast – Functional fitness at 5Star

The term ‘functional fitness’ is being  thrown around in gyms across the UK more than ever before, so what does it really mean and what are the benefits to you!?
I like to think of Functional Training as a movement continuum. In our daily activities we perform a wide range of movement activities including walking, jogging, running, sprinting, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, turning, standing, starting, stopping, climbing and lunging. All of these activities require smooth co-ordinated movements in three main planes of movement.
In order to improve our functional strength we need to increase more than just the amount of force we can produce. We need to improve our co-ordinated working between our nervous and muscular systems in turn helping us become functionally strong for our everyday lives.
Due to the dynamic nature and multi joint working of functional fitness exercises, it has a huge knock on effect to increasing your metabolic rate and stripping fat! There are some great pieces of Kit our trainers use at 5 Star Health and Fitness to help improve our member’s functional fitness. Such pieces include: Kettlebells, Bulgarian bags, TRX suspension trainers, Kenisis stations, Battle ropes and much more.
In traditionally equipped gyms, exercises that are performed on strength training machines would be considered at the lower end of the functional training continuum as they are only exercising muscles in a stabilized, controlled environment.
This doesn’t however mean that you should swap your traditional strength routines for a full functional training program. To get great results this summer, combine traditional strength exercises with functional training routines to get you lean mean and strong and functionally fit for everyday life!
